Move on Malaria
In 2008
TSMP and IMA began
a very exciting partnership
with the
Ugandan
non-profit
Pilgrim,
an amazing and
admirable
organisation.
Founded by
a Ugandan
man, Pilgrim is devoted to the displaced people of the north,
a tragedy ignored by most of the people of Uganda. This
October, Pilgrim began its “Move on Malaria” campaign to
“move against malaria on all fronts” all across the Teso region.
The campaign began in Katakwi, an area hit hard not only
by the rebels but also currently suffering frequent violent
raids by the
Karamojong“cattle warriors.” It’s
an area
where people live in
extreme
insecurity
and with
great need
for health
services.
Pilgrim
went village
to village,
camp to camp, to every home in Katakwi District. They
sprayed the homes, mostly grass-thatched huts, for mosquitos. During the spraying, clinics were set up to treat active malaria and to de-worm children. IMA recruited Ugandan nurses and midwives to join the Pilgrim team. They administered vaccinations to all children five and younger and
vaccinated all women of child-bearing age for tetanus.
IMA nurses and midwives
vaccinated 10,759 children. It was an enormous undertaking, but given the energy and commitment of both organisations, it was bound to
succeed. Pilgrim, TSMPand IMA will return to Katakwi,
and TSMP and IMA plan to continue to partner with Pilgrim in the Kumi
District of Teso.
